We have gathered the questions we hear most on residence permits, work permits, Turkish citizenship, family residence and appeal processes on a single page. Search, or filter by category — ask us anything you cannot find.
Residence Permit How long is a residence permit valid for?
The duration depends on the type: short-term residence is usually 6 months to 1 year (up to 2 years depending on circumstances), student residence covers the duration of studies, and long-term residence is granted indefinitely after 8 years of uninterrupted residence. Each type follows its own renewal cycle; an extension application must be filed before the expiry date.
Residence Permit What is the e-Residence system and how do you apply?
e-Residence is the official online application platform of the Directorate General of Migration Management. You fill in the application form, book an appointment through the system, and submit your documents in person on the appointment day. It is not fully digital; an in-person appointment is mandatory for biometrics and document submission. An incorrectly completed form is the most common cause of delay.
Residence Permit How long does it take to get an appointment?
It varies by region and period; in busy provinces such as İstanbul a 1–3 month wait is normal, while smaller provinces are shorter. Those whose permit is about to expire are prioritised under the "near-expiry" category. The appointment day sets the date of document submission, not of the application itself — which is why applying early is critical.
Residence Permit My residence permit has expired — what happens?
If you do not renew before the permit expires, your legal stay status ends; administrative fines, an exit record, an entry ban and removal risk arise. The renewal application should be filed from 60 days before expiry and, in any case, before the permit lapses. If the deadline has been missed, the situation must be assessed quickly. Details: Residence permit renewal.
Residence Permit My residence permit was rejected — what can I do?
When the decision is served on you, a 30-day appeal period begins; this period is strict and cannot be extended. The grounds for rejection are stated in the decision text, and the appeal strategy is built accordingly — missing documents, insufficient income or an insurance/address issue each require a different approach. A fresh application without resolving the grounds may produce the same result.
Residence Permit How do I move from short-term to long-term residence?
A long-term residence application is filed once 8 years of uninterrupted legal residence are completed. Continuity is critical: time abroad exceeding 180 days in any rolling 1-year period, or 365 days in total over the last 5 years, counts as a break. In addition, not having received social assistance in the last 3 years, a regular income and valid health insurance are required.
Residence Permit Does a work permit also cover residence?
Yes. Under Law No. 6458, a valid work permit stands in place of a residence permit; no separate residence application is required. When the work permit ends it is either renewed or an independent residence application is filed — otherwise legal stay status is interrupted. Work Permit.
Residence Permit Does time spent outside Türkiye affect my residence permit?
Yes — there is an uninterrupted-residence rule. For long-term residence, time abroad exceeding 180 days in any rolling 1-year period, or 365 days in total over the last 5 years, counts as a "break" and can reset the clock. Short trips are not a problem; long and frequent stays abroad put the renewal at risk.
Residence Permit For what duration can a residence permit be obtained?
A short-term residence permit is granted for a maximum of 2 years at a time; depending on the type and the file, the administration may grant a shorter period. Continuity is preserved through successive renewals in the same category. Indefinite status is not granted directly — transition to long-term residence follows 8 years of uninterrupted residence.
Residence Permit Is tourism-purpose residence still granted?
Yes; if a tourism-purpose stay exceeds 90 days a short-term residence permit is required. However, assessment has tightened: neighbourhoods with a high density of foreigners (over a thousand nationwide) are closed to new registration, so an address-based restriction may apply. We check the current closed-neighbourhood status together before applying.
Residence Permit Is transition from student residence to a work permit possible?
Yes. A work permit is a separate file, independent of student residence, and stands in place of a residence permit once approved. Undergraduate students may work within certain limits; timing matters when moving to a full work permit after graduation. Time spent as a student is partly taken into account, depending on its type, in the long-term residence calculation.
Residence Permit Does an address change affect my residence permit?
An address change must be reported within 20 business days: a notification to the Provincial Directorate of Migration Management is enough within the same province, while moving to another province requires a new residence application. An unreported change can cause official notices to go undelivered and lead to a negative assessment in renewal/extension applications.
Residence Permit Is the health insurance requirement the same for every type?
No. Valid private health insurance or general health insurance (SGK) is required for most residence types; there may be an exemption in some applications for those over 65, and different rules for students and foreigners holding a work permit. The policy must cover the permit period and meet the Migration Management criteria.
Work Permit How long is a work permit valid for?
The first work permit is granted for a specific employer and workplace for a maximum of 1 year. With the same employer, the first extension adds up to 2 years and later extensions up to 3 years. Moving to a different employer counts as a new application. After 8 years of lawful work or long-term residence, one may apply for an indefinite work permit.
Work Permit Does the employer or the employee file the work permit application?
For a first application from abroad, the employer files the electronic application through the Turkish mission in the foreigner's country. For a foreigner with valid residence in Türkiye, the employer initiates the application/extension via e-Government. For an Independent Work Permit and the Turquoise Card, the foreigner applies in their own name.
Work Permit What happens if the employer changes?
A fresh application is filed for the new employer; legally this counts as a new (first) application, and the old permit loses validity when the new one is approved or when the employment contract ends. Although "work permit transfer" is used in everyday language, in practice a new file is opened; timing matters so you are not left without a permit between jobs. Work Permit Types.
Work Permit What happens if a work permit is rejected?
When the decision is served, a 30-day appeal period begins; this period is strict. The appeal is built around the grounds for rejection — missing documents, the employer-to-foreigner ratio, a quota or a sector restriction each require a different response. A fresh application of the same type, without resolving the grounds, usually produces the same result. Details: What does a rejection decision tell you?
Work Permit Who is eligible for the Turquoise Card?
Qualified labour (education, expertise, R&D experience), qualified investors, scientists and researchers, and internationally successful people in culture, the arts and sport may apply. Applications are assessed through a points system. A 3-year "transition period" is granted first, after which it becomes indefinite; it grants dependent rights to spouse and children.
Work Permit Is the foreigner ID number issued together with the work permit?
The foreigner ID number, starting with 99, is issued when a residence or work permit application is registered. The number is generated in the system during the work permit process; taxes, banking, SGK and all official transactions run through it. Details: Foreigner ID Number.
Work Permit What is the difference between a work permit and a residence permit?
A residence permit is permission to stay legally in Türkiye; a work permit is permission to perform paid work. A valid work permit also stands in place of a residence permit, so no separate residence application is needed. However, a residence permit alone does not grant the right to work — a work permit is always required in order to work. Residence permit types.
Work Permit Can family reunification be done on a work permit?
Yes. The foreign spouse and children under 18 / dependent children of a work permit holder file a separate application for a family residence permit. The type and remaining duration of the work permit affect the outcome; the family permit is granted so as not to exceed the sponsor's permit period. Family Residence.
Work Permit What does a work permit rejection mean?
A rejection usually stems from missing/inconsistent documents, the employer-to-foreigner ratio (the 5-Turkish-citizen rule), a quota or a sector restriction. The grounds are categorised in the decision text; the appeal and any subsequent application strategy are built around it. A fresh application made without reading the grounds carries the same risk.
Work Permit Does the 5-Turkish-citizen rule apply in every sector?
The standard rule is the employment of at least 5 Turkish citizens for each foreigner at the workplace. However, the Turquoise Card, foreign company partners, technopark/R&D and certain special statuses are exempt from this ratio. We assess the situation together according to your sector and workplace structure.
Work Permit Who can apply for an Independent Work Permit?
It is granted to foreigners who will practise a profession independently of an employer or set up their own business; the conditions in the relevant professional legislation, sufficient capital/income and, for most professions, a certain period of legal residence are required. The assessment is at the Ministry's discretion; the first permit is usually 1 year, then extended.
Work Permit What exactly is required for an Indefinite Work Permit?
The core requirement is to hold a long-term residence permit OR to have worked for at least 8 years on an uninterrupted lawful work permit. Meeting the conditions does not grant an absolute right; the application is assessed at the Ministry's discretion. The indefinite permit document is renewed every 5 years and provides the rights of long-term residence.
Citizenship How long does Turkish citizenship take?
Assessment after the application takes 18–36 months on average. Before reaching this stage, the general route requires 5 years of uninterrupted legal residence and the marriage route requires 3 years of shared life. Missing documents extend the process; you must be in Türkiye when an interview call comes.
Citizenship What happens if it is rejected?
For a citizenship rejection, the judicial route is open: an action may be filed at the Administrative Court within 60 days of service. This differs from work/residence permits, where there is first a 30-day administrative appeal. For rejections due to missing documents, reapplying after resolving the grounds may also be considered.
Citizenship Can spouse and children become citizens together?
A spouse does not become a citizen automatically — they apply separately after meeting their own conditions (for example, 3 years of marriage). When the applicant acquires citizenship, children under 18 can generally acquire Turkish citizenship through the parent, with the other parent's consent as well. Each individual's file is assessed separately.
Citizenship Is dual citizenship possible?
Türkiye permits dual (multiple) citizenship; you do not need to renounce your existing citizenship to become a Turkish citizen. However, the other country's rules may differ — some states cause the loss of their own citizenship or require permission/notification. This part is subject to the person's own national legislation.
Citizenship Which documents are required?
The document list varies by application route (marriage, general residence, exceptional) and by the person's situation; there is no single list. In general, identity, residence and civil-status documents plus proof of income form the core. A complete list specific to you is prepared in the free initial consultation, after your file has been reviewed.
Citizenship How much does the service cost?
The exact figure is determined case by case, so it is not shared here. The fee depends on the application route and the scope of the file; because we work directly with no intermediaries, our pricing is transparent. The exact price for your case is shared in the free initial consultation, after your situation has been assessed.
Citizenship Can I obtain citizenship through the Turkish-origin Certificate?
Holders of a Turkish-origin Certificate (under Law No. 2527) may gain an advantage in an exceptional citizenship application. Obtaining the certificate is itself a separate application process and not everyone is within scope. We assess together in the consultation whether your situation falls within this scope.
Citizenship Can I travel abroad during the process?
You can; a citizenship application does not prohibit travel abroad. However, you must be in Türkiye when the Ministry calls you for an interview or documents; a long absence can also affect the continuity of the 5-year residence in a general application. We manage the travel plan together with the process.
Citizenship What are the conditions for citizenship via the 5-year residence route?
Five core conditions are required: 5 years of uninterrupted legal residence, ties showing the intent to settle in Türkiye (home, work, family), a regular source of livelihood, good moral conduct and general health. Long stays abroad may count as a break; the type of residence permit is also decisive in counting the period. Each criterion is assessed at the file level.
Citizenship When can a marriage-based citizenship application be filed?
A foreigner who has been married to a Turkish citizen for at least 3 years and genuinely continues the marriage (family unity under the same roof) may apply. Marriage alone does not grant citizenship; suspected marriages of convenience are examined rigorously. If the Turkish spouse passes away after the application, the family-unity condition is no longer sought.
Citizenship What are the investment-route citizenship options?
The main route is purchasing real estate worth at least USD 400,000 with a commitment not to sell it for 3 years (annotated on the title deed); sub-categories also include bank deposits, government debt instruments, shares and employment. It leads to exceptional citizenship by Presidential decision. Note: we carry out the document and process tracking of your citizenship file; for the investment-side steps — property selection, title deed and financial planning — we connect you with our long-standing partner law office and coordinate both sides from a single point.
Citizenship How is Turkish citizenship acquired by birth?
Descent is the basis: a child born to a Turkish mother OR father becomes a Turkish citizen by birth, regardless of where they are born. A child born in Türkiye who cannot acquire any state's citizenship from their parents is also deemed Turkish. For births abroad, a separate civil-registry process is required.
Citizenship Who is eligible for exceptional citizenship?
It may be granted exceptionally by Presidential decision (Article 12 of Law No. 5901) to people who make an extraordinary contribution to Türkiye in industry, science, technology, culture, the arts or sport, or who are seen as a strategic benefit. It is not a regular application; it requires a justified, strongly documented file.
Citizenship Is the Blue Card the same as citizenship?
No. The Blue Card is granted to those who were Turkish by birth and left citizenship with an exit permit (and to their descendants); it is not citizenship, but it provides treatment like a Turkish citizen in most rights, such as residence, work, property acquisition and inheritance. Rights such as voting and being elected, public office and military service are outside its scope.
Citizenship Can I change jobs while my citizenship application is under review?
It is generally possible; a citizenship application does not prohibit changing jobs. However, since the employment and income conditions submitted with the application are an assessment criterion, preserving income continuity and reporting material changes to the Ministry are important for the integrity of the process.
Citizenship Is a Turkish-language test required for Turkish citizenship?
There is no formal, standard Turkish-language test. In a general application, sufficient Turkish is assessed at the interview (commission meeting) stage; a level allowing everyday communication is expected. What may be asked and how to prepare are explained in the initial consultation.
Citizenship After acquiring citizenship, is my old passport still valid?
Acquiring Turkish citizenship does not automatically invalidate your other country's passport; that depends on that country's legislation. Some states do not allow dual citizenship and cause the loss of their own citizenship. You should confirm the status of your old passport according to your own country's rules.
Family Residence How long does a family residence permit take?
The application is filed with the Provincial Directorate of Migration Management; assessment takes 30–35 business days on average. The period runs from the date the file is submitted in full; it extends when missing documents are requested. The permit is granted in periods of up to 3 years each time and so as not to exceed the sponsor's own permit period.
Family Residence I have a work permit — can my spouse and child get family residence?
Yes. The foreign spouse and children under 18 / dependent children of a foreigner holding a valid work or residence permit may apply for a family residence permit. A separate file is prepared for each individual; the permit granted is arranged so as not to exceed the sponsor's own permit period.
Family Residence Is a single file prepared for spouse and children?
A separate application file is prepared for each family member, but the process is carried out simultaneously and together. Consistency of the documents is critical — income, housing and health insurance must cover the whole family. A missing document for a single individual can delay the entire application.
Family Residence Does family residence count toward citizenship later?
Yes, it can. Uninterrupted years spent in Türkiye on a family residence permit are included in the 5 years of legal residence required for general citizenship and in the long-term residence calculation. The continuity rules (limits on time abroad) apply here too. We build the long-term plan together.
Family Residence My permit is about to expire — can I renew it?
Yes. A family residence permit is renewed via an extension application from 60 days before expiry and, in any case, before the period lapses. Being late creates a risk of losing legal status; the sponsor's permit must also remain valid. We track the renewal date for you.
Family Residence Which documents are required?
There is no single list; the documents vary by the applicant's situation and family structure. In general, marriage/birth certificates, the sponsor's proof of income and permit, housing and health insurance covering the family form the core. A complete list specific to you is prepared in the consultation, after your file has been reviewed.
Family Residence How much does the service cost?
The exact figure is not shared here; the fee depends on the number of family members, the permit period and the scope of the file. Because we work directly with no intermediaries, our pricing is transparent. The exact price for your case is shared in the free initial consultation, after your situation has been assessed.
Family Residence Under what permit does the foreign spouse of a Turkish citizen stay?
A foreigner who marries a Turkish citizen stays legally in Türkiye on a family residence permit. Once 3 years of marriage are completed and family unity genuinely continues, the right to apply for citizenship via marriage arises. The residence period also contributes to a future general citizenship assessment.
Appeal · Cancellation · Transfer When does the appeal period begin?
The period begins with the formal service of the decision on you — service may be via e-Government/UETS, an official letter or in-hand delivery. For residence/work permit rejections, the administrative appeal period is 30 days and is strict, with no extension. Correctly identifying the service date is the first and most critical step.
Appeal · Cancellation · Transfer Do I write the appeal petition myself?
No. The appeal requires case-specific reasoning and the correct administrative language; a ready-made template often falls short. Each ground for rejection (missing documents, income, the employer-to-foreigner ratio, public order) calls for a different argument. We analyse the grounds for rejection, prepare the appeal file and coordinate the process.
Appeal · Cancellation · Transfer What is the difference between Administrative Court and administrative appeal?
An administrative appeal is filed with the administration/Ministry that issued the decision; within 30 days, free of charge, and faster. The Administrative Court is the judicial route; the filing period is 60 days, court fees and litigation costs arise, and the process can take 1–2 years. Which one is appropriate depends on the type of rejection and the grounds.
Appeal · Cancellation · Transfer How soon can a rejected application be filed again?
There is no legal waiting period; you can reapply immediately. However, an application made without resolving the grounds for rejection will most likely produce the same result. The right approach: first resolve the reason in the decision text, then reapply. Details: What a work permit rejection tells you.
Appeal · Cancellation · Transfer My permit was cancelled — can I stay in Türkiye?
Until the cancellation decision becomes final, your legal status continues; you may stay in Türkiye during the appeal or court period. Once the period ends and the decision becomes final, the situation changes and exit/removal may come onto the agenda. This is why not missing the appeal period is critical. Details: Residence permit renewal.
Appeal · Cancellation · Transfer What happens to my old permit when I change employer?
The old work permit cannot be used for the new employer; a fresh application is filed with the new employer, and the old permit loses validity when the new one is approved or when the employment relationship ends. In this transition, managing timing so as not to be left without a permit/status between jobs is critical. Details: Work Permit.
Appeal · Cancellation · Transfer How many years of entry ban does a deportation decision bring?
The period varies by the decision and the grounds (unpaid fines, visa/residence violations, public order, etc.); it starts from 1 year and can be much longer — in some cases indefinite. The exact period cannot be stated without examining the restriction code and grounds in the decision text; every file is different.
Appeal · Cancellation · Transfer What happens if a citizenship application is rejected?
For a citizenship rejection, the appeal route differs from work/residence permits: rather than an administrative appeal to the Ministry, it takes the form of an application directly to the Administrative Court, within 60 days of service. Reading the grounds for rejection correctly determines the timing and strategy of any new application. Details: Turkish Citizenship.
General How is the free initial consultation carried out?
It is an initial assessment of about 20–30 minutes, by phone, WhatsApp or in person at the office. We listen to your situation, explain the suitable application route with realistic timing and conditions, and share the exact price for your case. No binding commitment is required; you are welcome simply to come for information.
General How is the service fee determined?
The exact figure is not fixed; it is determined by the type, scope and urgency of the file. Because we work directly with no intermediaries, our pricing is transparent and there are no surprises during the process. The exact amount for your case is shared in the free initial consultation, after your situation has been assessed.
Have another question on your mind?
In a free initial consultation we evaluate your situation together — a roadmap specific to your file and the exact price are shared during that consultation.
