Right to work

None of these permit types alone gives you the right to work. First you get a residence permit, then you can apply for a work permit. For student residence, when the right to work begins depends on your education level.

You do not choose the permit type. The type that fits your situation is determined case by case. The right question is not "which one do I want" but "which one is possible for me."

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions

The questions on your mind

How long does a residence permit last?

A short-term permit is issued for a maximum of 2 years at a time — in practice most often 1 year; long-term is indefinite once the 8-year requirement is met; student residence lasts for the duration of studies. Each type has its own renewal cycle.

What is the e-İkamet system, how do you apply?

The Migration Directorate's online application platform. The application form is filled in, an appointment is booked, documents are submitted in person. It is not fully digital; a physical appointment is still required.

How long does it take to get an appointment?

It varies by region and period. In Istanbul, 1–3 months of waiting is normal. Permits close to expiry are prioritized in the "near expiry" category.

What happens when the residence permit expires?

If an application is not made within 10 days of expiry, you fall outside the legal stay period. Administrative fines, entry bans and deportation risk arise. You need to apply at least 60 days before expiry. Detail: Residence permit renewal.

Residence permit was rejected, what is done?

There is a 30-day legal appeal window. The appeal file is re-prepared and missing documents are completed based on the rejection grounds. There may be a waiting period before reapplying.

What are the most common mistakes in a residence permit application?

In 23 years of file practice, these are the five mistakes we see most often — all five come from decisions made at the first application.

  • Applying under the wrong typeApplying under the "most common" category when it doesn't actually fit your situation means you can't use that category's advantages. An advantage lost at the first application often doesn't come back at later renewals — that's why the right type is identified during the initial consultation.
  • Overlooking the advantage of applying through a family tieWhen a family tie exists, applying under a different category "to be quick" can mean losing the long-term advantages and time count that category provides; which category is right depends on your family situation and is identified during the initial consultation.
  • Mistaking a residence permit for a work permitNo residence type alone gives the right to work. A residence permit is a precondition for a work permit: first residence, then a work permit application.
  • Leaving the application to the last dayIf you don't apply within 10 days after expiry, the right to renew is lost and the file has to start from scratch. Administrative fines and entry-ban risk follow.
  • Not counting days spent abroadThere is an uninterrupted-residence rule; too much time abroad can negatively affect renewal and the transition to long-term status. Most people find this out only after a rejection.

How to transition from short-term to long-term?

Once the 8-year uninterrupted legal residence requirement is met, the long-term residence application is made. Proof of continuity (annual renewals, checking time abroad) is the most critical point.

Does a work permit also include a residence permit?

Yes — during the work permit period a separate residence permit is not required. When the work permit ends it is either renewed or an independent residence application is made. Work Permit.

Does time outside Türkiye affect the residence permit?

Yes — there is an uninterrupted residence rule. Staying abroad for more than a certain number of days in a calendar year may negatively affect renewal/extension applications. The exact duration varies by type and period.

How can I check my residence permit application status online?

The Migration Directorate's official system, e-İkamet, is where your file lives — there is no separate public "tracking" website. Be careful with unofficial sites that ask for money or personal documents to "check status" for you.

  • Official channelYour application lives in the e-İkamet system, run by the Presidency of Migration Management (Göç İdaresi). This is where status changes and appointment details appear.
  • No separate tracking siteThere is no separate public website just for "checking status." Search results showing other tools are often unofficial or outdated.
  • Be careful with copiesSome sites copy the look of official pages and ask for a fee or your ID/passport details to give you a "status update." The real system never asks for payment to check status.

What is the Provincial Directorate of Migration Management, and how does it relate to the Istanbul Governorship?

Residence permit decisions in each province are made by that province's Provincial Directorate of Migration Management (İl Göç İdaresi Müdürlüğü), part of the Presidency of Migration Management under the Ministry of Interior. In Istanbul, this office is administratively linked to the Istanbul Governorship — this is why the two names appear together in official correspondence.

  • Who decidesYour province's Provincial Directorate of Migration Management reviews and decides your file — not a central office in Ankara.
  • Why the Governorship name appearsProvincial migration offices are administratively tied to the Governorship (Valilik) of that province. In Istanbul, that is the Istanbul Governorship.
  • Same office, different names"Göç İdaresi İstanbul", "İl Göç İdaresi Müdürlüğü" and "T.C. İstanbul Valiliği İl Göç İdaresi Müdürlüğü" all refer to the same authority.

I found an unskilled job in Turkey — do I need a residence permit before I can work?

Yes. A residence permit alone does not give you the right to work, but in almost every route a valid residence status comes before or together with a work permit application. Working without a work permit — including informal or unskilled jobs — is against the law, regardless of your residence status.

  • Order mattersIn most cases, residence status is established first, then the employer applies for your work permit. The two are linked but not the same document.
  • The employer appliesA work permit application is normally filed by the employer, not the foreign worker alone. An employer offering unskilled work without going through this process is a warning sign.
  • Informal work is still illegalWorking without a valid work permit — including day labor or unskilled jobs — carries fines and can affect future residence and work permit applications.

Is a family residence permit a different application than an individual residence permit?

Yes. If you are applying through a Turkish citizen or legal-resident foreign spouse or family member, that is a separate category — family residence permit — with its own conditions. The other types on this page (short-term, long-term, student) are for people applying on their own, independent of a family member's status.

  • Based on a relationshipFamily residence depends on a Turkish citizen or legal-resident foreign spouse, parent, or child — not on your own independent grounds.
  • Different conditionsIncome, health insurance and marriage/kinship proof requirements differ from the four individual types described on this page.
  • When it endsIf family unity is disrupted (divorce, death, child turning 18), a new independent application may be needed — see "Disrupted family unity" in the profiles above.
