Work Permit Types

Which type is right for you?

There are four main work permit types defined for foreign nationals in Turkey (Türkiye). Each has different conditions, durations and decision complexity — finding the right type is the most critical step in the process.

In a work permit, the applying party is legally the employer — the process runs together with your employer.

Four types side by side

The most important difference between work permit types isn't the duration — it's WHO applies for it and what it ties you to.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions

The questions on your mind

How long is a work permit valid?

A fixed-term permit is granted for a maximum of 1 year on first application; renewal applications add 2–3 year periods. After 8 years of uninterrupted work, the right to apply for an indefinite permit arises.

How long does a work permit application in Turkey take?

Once the file is complete, the Ministry's review of a work permit application in Turkey usually takes 30–35 business days. The total timeline depends on how quickly the employer-side documents come together; applications from abroad add the consulate step.

Is a Turkey work visa the same as a work permit?

No. A Turkey work visa is the entry document the consulate issues after the work permit is approved; the work permit itself is the right to work and, in most cases, also serves as a residence permit.

Who applies — the employer or the employee?

For applications from outside Türkiye, the employer submits the electronic application. For applications from within Türkiye, both the foreigner and the employer are involved in the process. For independent and Turquoise Card types, the foreigner applies in person.

What happens when the employer changes?

A new application is made for the new employer; the old permit is automatically cancelled. Although the term "work permit transfer" is used, in practice a new file is opened. More: Work Permit Types.

What is done if the work permit is rejected?

There is a 30-day legal appeal window. The appeal file is re-prepared and missing documents are completed based on the rejection grounds. There may be a waiting period before reapplying in the same type. Detail: What does a rejection decision say?

Who qualifies for a Turquoise Card application?

Those who meet certain criteria in top-level expertise (academic, artistic, athletic achievement), strategic investorship or science/technology. The list is updated; each file is assessed individually.

Is the foreigner ID number obtained together with the work permit?

The foreigner ID number (starting with 99) is obtained first. This number is required for the work permit application; it is issued by the Migration Directorate during the residence permit process.

What is the difference between a work permit and a residence permit?

A residence permit is a permit to stay in Türkiye; a work permit is a permit to perform paid work. When a work permit is obtained, the residence permit is generally considered valid as well; a separate application is not required. Residence permit types.

Can family reunification be done with a work permit?

The spouse and children of a work permit holder make a separate application for a family residence permit. The type and duration of the work permit affects the acceptance of this application. Family Residence.

How can I check my work permit application status online?

There is no single website where anyone can freely look up work permit status. By law the application belongs to the employer, so status is normally checked through the employer's own account — not a number the employee can search on their own.

  • Who can check itFor most permit types the application account belongs to the employer. Only for independent and Turquoise Card permits does the person apply directly. If you are the employee, ask your employer or your consultant for an update.
  • Not the same system as residence permitsWork permits are processed by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security. Residence permits and the foreigner ID number are handled separately by the Migration Directorate — the Presidency of Migration Management, PMM (Göç İdaresi Başkanlığı). Searching migration-system names will not bring up work permit results.
  • What we doAs your consultant, we follow the file with the Ministry directly and tell you where it stands — you do not need to search for it yourself.

Can foreigners get a work permit for unskilled or low-skill jobs in Türkiye?

It is harder, but the rule is about the position and the employer, not skill level alone. The employer must justify the role and keep a minimum ratio of Turkish staff at the workplace — this makes easily-replaceable, low-skill jobs harder to get approved, though not automatically closed.

  • What gets checkedApplications are assessed by sector, position and the Turkish-to-foreign employee ratio at the workplace — not simply by whether a foreigner wants the job.
  • Domestic work is a separate categoryNanny, caregiver and household-helper roles follow their own rules, different from a standard company work permit.
  • An honest check firstWe can tell you early whether a specific job offer has a realistic chance, before you spend time preparing a file.

What happens if a foreigner works without a valid work permit?

It is treated as illegal work, for both the foreigner and the employer — not a minor paperwork issue.

  • For the employeeConsequences can include an administrative fine and deportation.
  • For the employerThe employer risks a fine and can end up in a disadvantaged position for future work permit applications.
  • The safe orderWork should start only after the permit decision arrives — starting before approval is one of the most common mistakes we see in files.

How much does a work permit cost?

There are two separate items that are often confused: the official government charge and the consultancy fee.

  • Official chargePublished each year by the state; the amount varies by permit type — indefinite and independent permits cost significantly more than a fixed-term permit. Current amounts: 2026 work permit fees.
  • Consultancy feeDepends on the scope of the file; our transparent range is at the bottom of this page. It does not include government charges.
  • Who pays and whenGovernment charges are paid through the applying party (the employer), and only after approval.
